Essay / Do Not Go Gentle by Sherman Alexie - 858
In the most difficult situations, hope is the only thing left. Do Not Go Gentle by Sherman Alexie tells the story of a desperate Native American couple who try to find a way to bring their son out of a coma. One day, the grieving father leaves the hospital to buy his son a gift, hoping that he will recover. The father innocently walks into a small store called Toys in Babeland. This place was no ordinary baby toy store; it was an adult toy store. As he searches, he is impressed by a device called Chocolate Thunder. In her mind, this huge battery-powered vibrator is a powerful sex symbol. He supposes that if sex brings babies to life, perhaps it could be used as a tool to heal his child. He buys it and returns to the hospital. When he arrives at the hospital, he turns it on, leaving the other parents and hospital staff in shock. After a few minutes, they understand his intentions and decide to have fun. Hope plays a huge role in this news. This is what brings the desperate father to the point where he finds the sex symbol as the key to getting his baby out of the coma. People's hopes, in this case those of parents, change their perspective and the way they see things. People should realize that things are not always what they seem. Instead of looking at the vibrator with evil eyes, the Indian couple and hospitalized parents see it as a spark of hope. There are many things that symbolize what hope is. It's a little strange to pin someone's hopes on something like a vibrator. But the Indian couple had their own reasons and beliefs: maybe it was blasphemous, or maybe stupid and unnecessary, but we were all tired of waiting for our babies to die. We wanted our b...... middle of paper...... terrifying fears. Works Cited Alexandra M. Levine, MD. The importance of hope. West J Med: May 1989. National Biotechnology Center. Internet.
