Jealousy is what attracts the best and, of course, the worst of people. Iago in Shakespeare's play "Othello" is one of the worst villains in the world. Other villains, such as Scar in Disney's "The Lion King," Jafar in Disney's "Aladdin" and Mother Gothel in Disney's "Tangled" have intertwined motivations and jealous personalities. All four betray and kill for reasons that they believe will further the lives they intend to lead according to their master plans. Jealousy comes from never having enough power and feeling inferior. Iago's jealousy comes mainly from the fact that his boss, Othello, has chosen Cassio as his right-hand man. "A certain Michael Cassio, a Florentine, a boy almost damned by a beautiful wife; who has never put a squadron into the field, nor the division of a battle knows more than an old maid;" (1.1.2.) Iago thinks that Cassio is far too underqualified. As a result (not intentionally), Iago feels less like a man and gives him little power. He hates it when people are in a higher position than him. Additionally, by giving Cassio the position of lieutenant, it gave Iago someone new to direct his attention and jealousy towards. Iago hatches a plan to get revenge by making it appear that Othello's wife and his new lieutenant are having an affair behind his back. And then Iago can get the job he thinks he deserves in the first place. Another reason why Iago is extremely jealous is because he suspects that Othello has slept with his wife. Iago says: “I hate the moor: and the stranger is thought that between my sheets he has done my office: I know not whether it is true; but I, for a mere suspicion of this kind, will pretend to be sure."
