    In Greek mythology, Narcissus is known for his beauty. The gods forbid Narcissus, because of his appearance, from seeing his reflection. He is unaware of his appearance until the day he sees his reflection in the water of a spring. He falls in love with his reflection and becomes obsessed with it. Narcissus, paralyzed by the fear of his own reflection, ends up withering away. Today, psychiatrists would diagnose Narcissus with a case of narcissistic personality disorder. This mental disorder can be identified by symptoms, can be treated, and has a variety of possible causes. Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is a mental disorder that is often confused with arrogance. According to the Mayo Clinic, NPD occurs when a person feels superior to everyone else and has a constant need for attention. Those who suffer from this disorder often lack the ability to feel empathy and do not form good connections with others (Mayo Clinic 1). NPD is identified with dramatic and irrational behavior and has symptoms that coincide with the disorder. Victims of this disorder often demonstrate great jealousy, arrogance, and also lack the ability to empathize with others. (Mayo Clinic 1). Sufferers also tend to exaggerate their achievements, expect constant admiration, take advantage of others, and often have difficulty creating and maintaining relationships (Mayo Clinic 1). The average person possesses many of these qualities simply because of human nature. In fact, according to the Narcissism reference entry, this behavior of wanting to be the best is considered a normal stage of child development.
