Essay / Unemployment and Migration in the Philippines - 1629
Labor migration created jobs for millions of Filipinos; however, its success obscures its true cause. Unemployment itself has many factors that harm growth and development. The country's cycle of problems continues to grow, including migration, unemployment, poverty and underemployment. This article will aim to illustrate the effects of international migration due to unemployment status. The issue of high unemployment is an important factor in the development of the country and is generally affected by several elements such as lack of employment opportunities, population growth, an increase in the working population insufficiently satisfied by the labor market , and particularly more attractive prospects in developed countries (Brooks, 2002). Although it has generally followed a downward trend, the unemployment rate in the Philippines remains the highest compared to other Southeast Asian countries and has remained higher than the average unemployment rate in the region (Abella and Alburo, 2002; . In 2012, Malaysia's unemployment rate was 3 percent; Singapore, 2.1 percent; and Thailand, 0.7 percent, both significantly lower than that of the Philippines (Padilla, 2013). A recent survey by the Social Weather Station (SWS) revealed an unemployment rate of 27 percent in January 2014, while the official unemployment rate of the Department of Labor Force Survey, conducted by the Philippine Statistics Authority, reached 7.5 percent, or 2.9 million individuals, compared to an average of 7 percent in 2011 and 2012 and 7.1 percent in 2013 (Desiderio, 2014; Antonio, de Villa, Esguerra, 2014 ). The methodology and percentage results of these two surveys vary but both reveal that there were more unemployed workers in the 15-24 age group...... middle of article.. ....ttp://www.nscb.gov.ph/ncs/10thNCS/papers/contributed%20papers/cps-03/cps03-04.pdfOverseas Absentee Voting Act of 2003 Retrieved from http: //www.lawphil.net/statutes/repacts/ra2003/ra_9189_2003.html Padilla, A.
