    Before taking this course, I had heard of unions in the workplace, but I didn't know exactly what they were. In the museum, it was said that black employees of Pullman Porter were able, for the first time, to form a union. When these employees met in secret to discuss their working conditions, they were already unionized; an informal union. Nowadays, it was not necessary for them to be recognized by their employer as a union to form a union. The Pullman Porters came together in solidarity as a brotherhood; united to strengthen the numbers. The Pullman Porters were finally able to bargain collectively with their employer. Before this class, I wasn't sure what that meant but as I heard in the museum video of this accomplishment, I was able to understand that the representatives of Pullman Porters and the representatives of their employers had to negotiate the terms and conditions of their employment and dictate their rules. them in a contract regarding wages, hours and labor
