Essay / Application of Person-Centered Therapy to Meng's Case , and even to adults, including the elderly. (O'Connor and Schaefer 1994). Play therapy techniques are chosen for Meng, not only because of her chronological age, but also to help Meng realize and express her feelings; manage anger; improve self-control; increase empowerment; and improve problem-solving skills. (a) The power animal technique: internalize a positive symbol of strength. This technique (by Deborah A. Hickey) requires the client to choose one animal from a wide variety that appeals to them the most. The client will then be asked to make a mask with the animal's face on it, and finally the therapist will ask the client to imagine what the animal might do in certain situations and how it might solve a specific problem. By regularly consulting with the animal, the therapist will help the client deepen the internalization of strengths and attribute the client's plans to the animal (Kaduson & Schaefer, 2001). The Power Animal technique is helpful to the client as a positive introject. Meng has low self-esteem and poorly integrated self-concept, ineffective problem-solving skills, and difficult relationships with peers and adults. Therapeutic goals of this technique include enhancing the client's positive sense of self and increasing their coping skills. It would be helpful and easier for Meng to clearly express the strengths he would like to have or the attributes that would help him cope more effectively. The Power Animal technique provides Meng with an imaginative and enjoyable method to internalize the strengths and attributes he desires. In doing so, Meng could...... middle of paper ...... move towards developing a sensitivity to life's issues and will develop a quality of empathy towards others. Indeed, it is all these attitudinal values that are essential for authenticity, trust and positivity to occur in the therapeutic relationship, for any therapeutic change to occur. In this case of Meng, the therapist values Meng as a unique and free person and helps Meng appreciate herself and be more in tune with her self-concepts. Despite the current climate that emphasizes short-term, directive, problem-solving therapy, person-centered therapy, with its humanistic nature, has been absorbed and applied as the backdrop and pillars of many modern counseling techniques. Most importantly, in conclusion, it is believed that the behavioral values of person-centered therapists will prevail, in the long term, in the field of counseling..
