The idea of liberalism, particularly in the United States, centers on the unalienable rights of the individual, such as the freedoms contained in the United States Bill of Rights. In the book The Strange Death of American Liberalism by HW Brands, Brands argues that liberalism in the United States could only survive in times of war. The United States retreats into liberalism when a war rages and it needs help from the federal government. On the other hand, the book Liberalism: The Genius of American Ideals by Marcus G. Raskin argued that there was no escaping liberalism. According to Raskin, liberalism has not disappeared into history as many people think. Liberalism is important in the United States because it moves the country in the direction of conservatism. In the United States, liberalism focuses on the right of all adult citizens to vote, equal rights, environmental protection, and government-imposed conditions on voting rights. education, health care, the construction of highways and canals, food for the hungry as well as shelter for the homeless. Liberalism also focuses on the freedoms enshrined in the Bill of Rights, such as freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of religion, the right to due process and equality before the law, as well as the separation of Church and State. The idea of modern liberalism, however, began in the 1930s with President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his New Deal. To understand the idea of modern liberalism, one must first understand where the idea of liberalism comes from. Liberalism grew out of the New Deal proposed by President Roosevelt as a way to produce the ideas of relief, recovery, and reform after the Great Depression. Raskin emphasized that liberalism was closely linked to modern democracy and was essential for a nation where it was not afraid to trust in the good morals of people. But overall, both books proved that liberalism was a medium that helped shape America today. Whether or not liberalism best served the American people during the war or whether they continue to thrive is a question that will remain as long as democracy is the choice of government in the United States. 1st ed.
