Analyze the methods used and the conditions that contributed to Joseph Stalin's rise to power. By 1924, the situation in Russia had stabilized somewhat and Lenin was able to rule a one-party system through force and fear. Even though Lenin was not yet at the peak of his success, fate decided that he would never reach it. He died on January 21, 1924, quite unexpectedly, due to the severity of three previous strokes. Immediately, the Politburo, which had assumed most of the responsibilities shortly before Lenin's death, began searching for a new leader. Yet no supreme leader could separate himself from the others, and a power struggle resulted, which lasted for another five years, until Stalin could claim that he alone held power. On his way to victory, he had to defeat several left-wing contenders, including Trotsky, Zinoviev and Kamenev, as well as several right-wing figures such as Bukharin, Tomsky and Rykov. Although debate among historians about why Stalin became leader of the Soviet Union is still ongoing, it is possible to identify some of the methods and conditions that in some ways contributed to the accession to Stalin's power.
