Janie struggles with the constant tugs of everyday life and people who try to make her into something she's not. In Their Eyes Were Watching God, Zora Neale Hurston shows that Janie is positively affected by the deaths of those close to her because each death teaches Janie something new that helps her get back up and give something back to the world. Were Watching God, Janie is positively affected by the death of Nanny, Janie's late grandmother; and Joe and Tea Cake, Janie's late husbands, because as the road progresses, Janie learns something new that makes her stronger with each task she faces and each death she encounters. The narrator says, “She hated her grandmother and had hidden it all these years under a cloak of pity. She was preparing for her great journey towards the horizons in search of people; it was important to the whole world that she should find them and they find her" (89).
