“It always seemed strange to me... the things we admire in men, kindness and generosity, openness, honesty, understanding and feeling, are the concomitants of the failure of our system. And those traits that we hate, sharpness, greed, acquisitiveness, malice, selfishness, and self-interest, are the traits of success. And while men admire the quality of the former, they love the products of the latter. This quote was once said by an amazing author, who described today's global society so perfectly that one can forget that he was describing his society in the early and mid-19th century. John Steinbeck is considered one of the greatest American literary authors. Many of his works are still read today as required reading in most high school and college literature classes across the United States. His most famous surviving story was The Grapes of Wrath, which won him the Nobel Prize for Literature and the Pulitzer Prize in 1940. Many of John Steinbeck's realistic accounts of life and the way people lived there. Steinbeck grew up in California's Salinas Valley, a diverse region with a rich history. His upbringing helped shape his writing, which gave many of his works a sense of place. The Chrysanthemums is a short story from the John Steinbeck collection of The Long Valley. In his short story, Les Chrysanthèmes, he deals with different social problems; however, some issues stand out more than others. Many people have interpreted the story in different ways, but my interpretation of the story depicts gender inequality in society, Elisa's character analysis, and the symbolic meaning of chrysanthemums. Throughout history, from ancient Greece to the modern world. , there is a...... middle of paper ...... so that there is truly equality in the eyes of society. He once said, “The writer must believe that what he is doing is the most important thing in the world.” And he must cling to this illusion even though he knows it is not true. In some ways I agree with him. Writers can write an amazing story that can explain, inform, and show real world problems in a thousand words or less. In The Chrysanthemums, John Steinbeck wrote another masterpiece that depicts women who have suffered, will suffer again, and perhaps will suffer in the future because of inequality. My interpretation of the story describes what I believe about gender inequality in society, the analysis of Elisa's character who suffers from this inequality, and the symbolic meaning of chrysanthemums. When will this inequality of women end, because even today women still suffer from this problem ?.
