Essay / Critical Thinking Case Study - 1724
In order for students to think critically, they must be taught critical thinking. The first step in promoting critical thinking is therefore to make students aware of what exactly it is. Critical thinking involves evaluating the accuracy and value of information as well as deconstructing an issue or argument. Once a basic understanding of critical thinking has been acquired and his students are able to identify its characteristics, he will be able to use specific teaching strategies such as questions in class discussions to help them to develop it further. Class discussion, which involves questioning that allows students to think critically, can take 3 forms: spontaneous, exploratory or thematic. All forms allow students to participate, whether out of interest, to clarify their understanding, or to explore a question further. If a Steven waits around 3 seconds after asking a question, he is likely to get responses from students and hence there will be greater interaction between students. Another strategy that could be used is to have students write after discussions, as this allows them to provide more information and add new thoughts or even ask questions of those who might be shy.
