Essay / Left-sided neglect: the power of the mind - 867
“Left-sided neglect… is a true neurological syndrome that occurs due to damage to the right hemisphere of the brain, such as might follow a stroke cerebral in the right hemisphere” (Genova 323). Lisa Genova, author of "Left Neglected," explores the confusing neurological disorder of Left Neglect through the eyes of Sarah Nickerson. Sarah is a champion multitasker who holds a prestigious position as Vice President of Human Resources at Berkley Consulting, is a mother of three, and wife to her husband Bob Nickerson, who also holds a prestigious position at another company. Sarah's life is hectic, fast-paced and constantly in motion. If it's not work, it's her children or other priorities that seem to pile up as Sarah moves forward in her life. Her hectic life comes to an abrupt end when one day she is involved in a serious car accident. Sarah's next memory is waking up in the hospital intensive care unit and learning that she suffered a brain injury that caused a condition known as left neglect, and it is this is where Sarah's journey throughout the novel begins. It seems that the clichéd phrase "mind over matter" really relates to many of the experiences and symptoms that Sarah suffered as a result of her left-handed neglect. In reality, an individual experiences two sides of the world, the left and the right. The head trauma suffered in the accident completely dissociated Sarah's mind from the left. Sarah's entire left side became nonexistent. It didn't matter what was actually in front of Sarah, what mattered was what her mind focused attention on. It seems like Genova tore a page straight out of the Twilight Zone, because initially one could only imagine this mess existing in the middle of paper...... a relatively normal and happy life with her family in their new home in Vermont while adapting to his new mental environment. In conclusion, “Left Neglected” really helps to understand the importance of the brain and the massive effects that injuries can have. An injury itself is life-threatening and recovery may not even occur. Huge life adjustments may need to be made. The brain is the life force of every living animal, and it is important to realize that a better understanding of the areas of the brain and how they are interconnected to form the reality that every human being can see can only help to solve problems for people like Sarah. Nickerson. For now, the first step we can take is prevention and perhaps driving a little slower to work when we are on the highway.Works CitedGenova, Lisa. Left Neglected: A Novel.
