In the film Shutter Island, Leonardo DiCaprio is portrayed as a US Marshal brought to Ashecliffe to investigate the disappearance of a patient, but it is later brought to his attention that he is actually a patient of Ashecliffe. DiCaprio, also known as Teddy Daniels or Andrew Laeddis, is haunted by a horrific past that caused psychological problems to develop and surface. Throughout the film, DiCaprio's character constantly affects the people around him in detrimental ways due to his illness. He also invokes stories and has delusions to avoid having to face the truth about his life and what he did in his past. Eventually he realizes the truth, but it doesn't last long and all his progress regresses. Someone watching this movie will only find out towards the end that Teddy/Andrew experienced things in his past that could have been experienced. triggered these psychological problems. In the film, we learn that he was a soldier during the Battle of Normandy and invaded an extermination camp, but found he was too late to save many people's lives. He and his unit executed many German soldiers in this camp. We also learn that Teddy comes home to his wife one afternoon after work and discovers that his wife has murdered their children in the lake behind their house. Seeing his children floating face down in the water, he rushes and brings them back to the yard but it is already too late to save them. Dolores asks her husband to bring the children to their house so they can become dolls to play with and Teddy takes it upon himself to murder his wife for killing their children. Much of the film deals with how DiCaprio's character affects others. He does everything possible to get to the middle of paper......t his life away from himself. Finally, when Teddy finally realizes the truth, he quickly loses all his progress and forgets everything. Throughout the movie it seemed like Teddy was a normal guy until the end of the movie where he ends up as a real patient at Ashecliffe and the majority of the movie was his delusions. “[Teddy's patient file indicated] that the patient is very intelligent. Very crazy. Decorated Army Veteran. Gift for the liberation...liberation of Dachau. Former US Marshal. Known propensity for violence. Shows no remorse for his crime because he denies the crime ever happened. Very developed and fantastic stories that prevent us from facing the truth of our actions. (Scorsese, 2010).
