Essay / Letter to My Son by Lord Chesterfield - 1395
The Letters to My Son are letters written by Lord Chesterfield to his son in which he praises and criticizes him. Chesterfield uses a number of literary devices in his letter such as metaphors, images, anastrophe, change of tone and many others. Additionally, Chesterfield uses rhetorical devices such as logos and name-calling so that his son can heed his advice. Chesterfield uses different tones and linguistic devices to convey the information he wants to his son. He changes his tone and uses different styles of language to be able to convince his son to follow the values and advice contained in the letter written to him. In the end, through his linguistic skills and tonal values, he is able to convey to his son his message intended to elevate him above all else and become an independent person. Chesterfield is suggestive and condescending in his language and tone of his letter, but his opinions are very clearly expressed. Chesterfield uses metaphors, whereby he uses them to describe his son's values. Chesterfield builds up his son and makes him face all the obstacles that may arise in his life in the near future. He takes his time to warn his son of the problems and struggles he will face in the future through a metaphor where he says: "the thorns and thorns that scratched and disfigured me in my youth" (Stanhope 91). He calls these problems thorns and brambles. He was afraid that his son would make the same mistakes he did when he was young, so he had to warn him in advance of what awaited him. He uses metaphors in his warnings simply to emphasize his points. Later, in his warnings to his son; Chesterfield also uses anastrophe to contradict his words. He uses anastrophe as a means of understanding paper......g depending on his father for the things he was unable to accomplish. Works Cited Chesterfield, Lord.
