  • Essay / The John Q Movie - 986

MOVIE SUMMARY: Based on the national health care crisis in the United States, John Q. Archibald, a father and husband whose son is diagnosed with an enlarged heart and discovers then that he cannot receive a transplant because his insurance will not cover it (Wikipedia); with time and options running out, he decides to hold a hospital full of patients hostage until his son's name appears on the list of beneficiaries. He faces a seasoned police hostage negotiator and an angry police chief who both want to end the standoff quickly (Ebert, 2002). OPTION 1: The character of John Q can be considered melancholic; the defining characteristic of a melancholic attitude is perfectionism (Enysenck, 1958). They are idealists who want things to be a certain way and become distressed when they don't. It is the result of their inner struggle between an imperfect world and a desire for perfection (Enysenck, 1958). This can be seen in the part where the police hostage negotiator informed him that his demands could not be met and put his son on the recipient list; he reacted to this by threatening to kill the hostages he was holding until his demands were met. For personality traits, John Q shows signs of an antagonistic personality as well as some agreeable personality (Barrera, 2011). These include: he had the empathy that was the scene during the hostage situation; he released the Hispanic mother with the baby and the black couple who were expecting a baby, he put himself in their shoes and felt their pain and agony (Barrera, 2011). He was also reliable because the hostages trusted him with their lives and they showed it through their constant relationships, even exchanging jokes (Kallenbach, 2002). He was tactful; it was simple but in a sort of middle of paper situation, there were two parties involved, namely John and the buyer. There was a conflict of needs and interests; that is, John Q wanted $200 for the TV while the buyer offered $25. Furthermore, the negotiation was done by choice; that is, either party could have withdrawn at any time (Roy J. Lewick, 2007). Works Cited Barrera, K. (2011, December 5).
