The massacre of seals had been taking place on the ice floe off the east coast of Canada in two regions, the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the east of the Magdalen Islands, for nearly 'half a decade. Every year, thousands of Canadian fishermen murder and slaughter seals between two weeks and two months old, drag them away, and skin the pups while they are still alive and conscious. They sell the skin to make leather and fashion clothing while the remains of the body are left to rot on the ice. I believe the process of bludgeoning seals is cruel and should stop before the seal population is threatened. Harp seals are usually the main target of the seal hunt. According to the Humane Society of the United States, 98 percent of harp seals were killed before they were three months old. Seals are slaughtered at around 25 days of age, as harp seals lose their white coats at around 12 to 14 days of age. Over the past 50 years, seals harvested ranged from 6,399 to 255,056 seals, and nearly a million seals were killed over the past three years. DFO says seal population has declined three times...
