This occurs when solid food is dumped into the small intestine without being digested. Dumping syndrome causes sweating, cramping, heart palpitations, dizziness and possibly diarrhea. The cause of dumping syndrome is not completely understood, but it is related to stomach size and poor diet following gastric bypass surgery. It can be subdivided into categories of early or late syndrome. Early dumping syndrome usually occurs half an hour to an hour after eating. Late dumping syndrome occurs later in reaction to hypoglycemia and can lead to fainting and loss of consciousness. Treatment for dumping syndrome involves changing the diet to limit simple carbohydrates and increase protein and fat, dividing calories into small meals and lying down after meals when possible (18, gastric bypass
