Effect of Adoption of Electronic Health Records System in Health Care FacilitiesIn recent decades, advancements in technology have influenced most industries in the United States to adopt computerization in their workplaces. Despite these changes, adoption of information technology has been slow in healthcare workplaces. The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act was signed into law in 2009 to promote the expansion of the implementation of health information technology in health care settings. Although the adoption of health information technology such as electronic health records (EHRs) has grown rapidly since the HITECH Act legislation, more than half of hospitals do not have a system basic EHR. The EHR system enables healthcare providers to save and retrieve patient data, thereby supporting improved clinical, organizational and societal outcomes. Despite the advantages of EHR, some studies in the literature highlight the disadvantages associated with EHR, including high investment and maintenance costs, workflow disruptions from trying to learn new technologies, and privacy concerns. . Although the importance of EHR is constantly reinforced, researchers continue to debate whether EHR system implementation will result in gains or losses. In order to improve the healthcare delivery system, EHR system should be adopted due to its potential health information technology benefits.
