Essay / Consequences of the Holocaust in the entire Maus By...
The Holocaust refers to the genocide that took place during World War II, during which approximately six million Jews were killed by the Nazis, a National Socialist party of German workers. led by Adolf Hitler. The Nazis placed Jews in ghettos, and from there, some were selected to be transported to extermination camps by freight train. The majority of Jews were killed in the gas chambers, in addition to this, some were placed in concentration camps where they were used as slaves until they died of exhaustion or disease (Spiegelman 62). In Art Spiegelman's comic strip The Complete Maus, he was able to depict his father Vladek's life experiences during World War II as a survivor. I will discuss the short and long term consequences of the Holocaust experiences for Vladek Spiegelman. The father of the arts, Vladek, experiences overwhelming loss, fear, stress and anger. This forced him to block out his emotions. In the book, we see that Vladek is dealing with extreme trauma, tremendous efforts to rebuild his life and family, and his aging processes. During the Holocaust, we see that Vladek lost his possessions to the Nazis when his factory was taken back from him. So this made his life difficult because it was his source of livelihood, but that doesn't stop him, therefore he turns to the black market to make money: “You don't know? All Jewish affairs were taken over. It is also evident that he has not fully healed from the experiences of the Holocaust. When Vladek recounts his experiences to his son and reflects on those past moments, he sometimes lowers his head or if he was performing a particular action, he slows down for a moment. This shows how his past still hurts him greatly. “It would take a lot of books, my life, and anyway, no one wants to hear such stories.” (Spiegelmann
