    According to course provision 4, the nurse is responsible for individual nursing practice. After the new nurse observed the nurse having difficulty concentrating, legally the supervising nurse was not following provision 4. The nurse was not demonstrating the correct actions for which she was responsible and was not responsible for his actions. It is stated that “recognition of responsibility for actions is the cornerstone of a profession because of the implicit social contract with the public” (Lachman, 2009, p. 57). The nurse was demonstrating actions that were inappropriate and likely to result in potential injury. The nurse must be responsible for her own actions. The new nurse was responsible and ensuring patient safety when the supervising nurse found herself impaired at work. Additionally, the nurse supervisor failed to comply with Provision 3. According to the course, Provision 3 states that "the nurse promotes, advocates, and strives to protect the health, safety, and rights of the patient." The code of ethics states that “nurses must protect the patient, the public, and the profession from potential harm when their practice appears impaired” (ANA, 2015, p. 13).
