Essay / "Skipper" and "As Birds Bring Forth the Sun" Analysis
In the short story "Skipper", Aldan Nowlan introduces the protagonist, Skipper. Skipper's mother, Ethel, yearns for a better life for herself and her son by outside their mining operation In the short story "As Birds Bring Forth the Sun", Alistair MacLeod introduces a young dog named cù mòr glas who is rescued by a father who lives by the sea by Aldan Nowlan and Alistair Macleod's "As the Birds Bring the Sunshine" appears to have little in common, but the two stories show the same series of events that lead Skipper and cù mòr glas to inflict unintentional pain on their loved ones. glas are abandoned emotionally and physically and both need love and affection Skipper is abandoned by his father emotionally and physically He needs attention from his father Rupert, but Rupert is content to "lounge in." the kitchen” after work and leaves Skipper alone most of the time (Nowlan 17). Rupert also calls Skipper a “brat” and beats him repeatedly with a strap (Nowlan 18). It is to his mother Ethel that he turns for love, affection and advice and to whom he also listens. Cù mòr glas was abandoned by her former owner when she was still a puppy. Left outside the “family door in a little handmade box,” the vulnerable cù mòr glas needs a home to ensure her survival at such a young age (MacLeod 568). The Man takes responsibility for cù mòr glas and provides her with the love and attention she needs. The caregivers in both stories, Ethel and the Man, go out of their way to care for and provide opportunities enjoyed by Skipper and cù more glass. Ethel takes the time to encourage Skipper to dream of his future away from the mining village, while her husband makes it clear that... middle of paper... he was "mutilated and maimed" and dying (MacLeod 570 ). Even though cù mòr glas did not intend to harm Man, he died. It is very clear that although the plots of the two stories have little in common; the underlying series of events is similar. In both stories, there is an abandoned character, Skipper et cù mòr glas, who is saved. Skipper and cù mòr glas are taken care of by their rescuer and are offered a potential second chance. Ultimately, Skipper and cù mòr glas unintentionally harm their rescuers, either physically or emotionally; however, their rescuers are both suffering. Even though "Skipper" is about a young boy growing up and "As Birds Bring Forth the Sun" is about a family legacy beginning with an animal attack, it is clear that both characters, Skipper and cù mòr glas, experience the same thing. series of events in their own respective lives.
