  • Essay / Fashion Hierarchy Essay - 894

Fashion is the creation of physical clothing designed to trigger the desire for consumption and conformity. Fashion is all about looks. Fashion is armor. Fashion is an experiment. Fashion is creative. Fashion is the product of a worldview. Fashion is an industry. Fashion is a phenomenon. People need fashion for many causes. Maslow's hierarchy of needs presents a five-step model that can be divided into "basic (or deficit) needs (e.g. physiological, safety, love and esteem) and growth (self-actualization) needs." (Abraham H. Maslow, 1998, page 98). Figure 1 Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs The lower-level basic needs of fashion must be satisfied before moving on to the higher-level growth needs. Once these lower needs are moderately satisfied, one will be able to reach the higher level called self-actualization, which will enable one to create one's own identity using fashion. After taking into consideration these essential components of fashion, we can see that clothing is not only necessary for basic survival needs. It is necessary for much more than protection from the elements (e.g. to appear acceptable in society, to create one's own look, to adopt a style through influences, to integrate into groups, to identify oneself and create relationships, etc.). As homo sapiens are extremely social animals, we often find ways to communicate who we are in the social environment. Because we are so influenced and affected by society, the act of fashion approval comes instinctively to us. To feel like we belong, we create and style our outward appearance to make an impression and help others understand who we think we are. The appearance we want in society is how we express our personality...... middle of paper ......ise, or are supposed to praise. The contrast ranges from the immediate – our friends, siblings and parents – to those far away – celebrities, pop stars, fashionistas, sports stars and other artists. We begin to identify with and worship our own superstars. Interestingly, in this age of media proliferation, our superstars are likely to be “well-orchestrated” celebrities. It has long been understood that a person's clothing choices affect how they are perceived, and we live in a culture where we are encouraged to admire and acquire. through inspiring images of eminent personalities. Instead, style and fashion should reflect one's character and self-esteem. We need to stand out with a unique style and not be a person who slavishly follows popular trends. “Fashions pass, but style is eternal” – Yves Saint Laurent. (Yale Breslin, 2012).
