Essay / Music in the Middle Ages - 1350
Looking back over our history, it is very difficult to realize that music reigned as one of the most influential components of artistic expression in our era. It has been part of the lives of many people around the world since the dawn of time. Music has been able to not only define the people who create it, but also to encompass and define an entire period and culture in its own right, leaving a very bold mark in history. Two pieces of music that played a pivotal role in their time are "In Paradisum" (by an anonymous individual) during the Middle Ages (600-1450) and "Same Love", by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, with Mary Lambert during the period. 21st century (2001-2100, specifically released in 2012). With the color of the tone, it is also impo...... middle of paper ......e standards on what artists usually sing today, it is very appropriate for our times. I enjoy listening to both pieces carefully and find great pleasure in their simplicity. The first time I heard “In Paradisum,” it instantly took me back to my childhood, when I went to church with my mother and sister. The room seemed awfully familiar and served as a soothing reminder of my past. The first time I listened to “Same Love,” I was in my car listening to the radio. During this time, I focused more on the lyrics. Once the chorus came, I realized how beautiful the piece as a whole was. Although these pieces may at first seem distinct and have no similarities, with just a little patience and concentration it becomes clear that both pieces have the power to offer complete simplicity and peace of mind..
