Under the new Affordable Care Act, Medicaid is expanded to a new degree, so that on paper it appears that Americans are getting health care that they deserve: "This means that, under the new law, an extremely expensive and already crisis-ridden program would not only be continued without any reform: it would be placed at the very center of the American health care system" ( Hood). Not only does this program already cost the government far too much money, but this system also poses many problems in the treatment of poor families. The truth is that many doctors won't even accept patients who use Medicaid and if they do, it's a once a month ordeal. On that day, a million people queue to try to get treatment and many don't get what they need. Another problem with or associated with Medicaid is the cost of medical insurance. Many families are on the verge of poverty and do not qualify for Medicaid. So they end up paying expensive health insurance and making much less money per year than a poor family on Medicaid. This pushes poor families to stay where they are instead of advancing in their careers or opportunities because they would no longer be eligible for government assistance.
