  • Essay / The Decline of Biodiversity: The Effect on Humanity

Early in the morning, animals of all species can be seen wandering through any normal suburban backyard. Common animals that can be seen are rabbits, squirrels, birds and many more. What if these animals slowly began to disappear, never to be seen again? This is the sad truth that is beginning to reveal itself on planet Earth. The Earth is currently experiencing one of the largest mass extinctions in history. Why isn't this on the front page of every newspaper? The answer to this question is time. Humans don't pay as much attention to things that happen over millions and billions of years, because those same humans won't be around long enough to see the damage done here and now. These extinctions occur over millions of years, and even a few species dying each year are enough to add up over millions of years. With this decline in diversity on planet Earth, how will this affect all of humanity? With all of these other species, a web has formed, and while it is extremely large and convoluted, it is also very fragile. The Earth's biosphere is only a potential species at risk of death, safe from catastrophic consequences in some cases, but the problems are still not resolved. Humanity's overexploitation of planetary resources is part of the problem, but it is certainly not the only one. Every action we take can have a potentially devastating impact on the environment. Some of the main problems facing diminishing biodiversity are pollution, destruction of natural habitat, and unsafe environmental practices such as drilling for fossil fuels or various precious minerals. Something must be done to help conserve biodiversity on Earth before...... middle of paper ...... he main culprits behind the staggering extinction figures are fossil fuels, it would seem a choice simple to eliminate them from use. Not only would this be impossible to achieve completely and quickly, but it would introduce a host of new economic and conceptual problems. Various solutions must indeed be adopted in a hurry, but solutions to carbon problems must be modest and long-term in nature. Create policies to better clean our production while finding ways to gradually reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. One way to eliminate the need for fossil fuels is to increase renewable energy technology. Renewable energies such as hydrogen and solar power are becoming more feasible every day as the cost of traditional energy increases, while the cost of energy produced by renewable sources steadily declines..
