Essay / The Truth About the American Dream - 946
Truth about the American Dream The American Dream is something that has been epically constructed in the media and in the thoughts of every American. For some, the American dream is the quest for happiness, for others, the superficiality of wealth. In the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald and the film Midnight in Paris by Woody Allen, based on the novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The characters don't fit their own vision of the American dream. One of the characters who doesn't fit the American dream is Tom Buchanan. Tom is a rich and powerful man, and much more than that. She is a very superficial silver person with few moral values. Which ultimately leaves his life very out of control. “His wife and mistress, until an hour ago secure and inviolable, were precipitously escaping from his control.” (Fitzgerald 131). According to Colin laPenta, wealth and power can transform a person into a sacred shell of their former self. “The arrogance and unfortunate quality that is often associated with powerful and wealthy people and Tom Buchanan is no exception. » (LaPenta). Additionally, Tom Never truly cared about the well-being of his fellow humans as long as he is safe in his mansion. Also, explains Matthew Bruccoli: “Although it is difficult to choose a single character flaw of Tom Buchanan, the most common is his cruelty, he believes that money and power give him the ability to intimidate others” (Bruccoli). Jay Gatsby is another character who falls short of the American dream and his own personal dream. Gatsby does not achieve his dreams because he tries not to look to the future, but rather to alter the future to resemble his past relationship with Daisy through wealth and power to become more like his new lover (Tom).
