  • Essay / Principles of the SAMREC Code - 1055

SAMREC is a short term for the South African Mineral Resources Committee and was established in 1998. This committee or working group has developed guidelines and recommendations for the South African Code -African mineral resources and minerals. Reserves, which is abbreviated as “SAMREC Code”. The SAMREC Code is applicable to all economic minerals or deposits. Transparency, competence and materiality are the three main principles which dictate the operation of the SAMREC Code. The reader of the public report must have sufficient information to understand the report; hence the principle of “transparency”. Competence is the principle that public reporting should be professional, meaning that the person writing the report should be qualified, experienced and adhered to the professional code of ethics. Finally, the principle of materiality requires that the public report contains all the necessary information that might be required by investors and their professional advisors. The main objective of the materiality principle is to make a fair or realistic judgment regarding the declared mineralization (SAMCODE; 2007). HOW THE SAMREC CODE IS IMPLEMENTED TO ENSURE RELIABLE HARDWARE PRODUCT DATA REPORTING There are certain elements that should be considered as a guide when evaluating a report in order to obtain a more reliable product data report. However, exploration professionals still need to make difficult decisions, such as deciding whether materials are considered a mineral resource or mineral reserve. All documentation of exploration results, mineral resources and mineral reserves must be prepared by a “competent person”. “A competent person is a person who is a member of a South African country... middle of paper ... what is expected when the material is extracted. Any adjustments made to mineral reserve estimates must be fully described in the report. A probable mineral reserve is estimated with a lower level of confidence, while a proven mineral reserve is estimated with a high level of confidence. Probable and proven mineral reserves should not be combined in public reporting unless relevant diagrams are provided for each group. CONCLUSIONS So far, SAMREC has done a very good job in ensuring reliable reporting of raw material data. What is most amazing about this task force is that it recognizes the importance of reviewing the codes from time to time, which then makes it more reliable. However, it is of utmost importance that those preparing the reports take into consideration the fundamental differences between the types of reports they prepare in order to avoid errors..
