Essay / The Theme of Laughter in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
Most of Tom Sawyer's reasons for laughter come from his unintentional fulfillment of a variety of stereotypes. Tom is a boy's boy and does things boys do and usually overdoes it. When we read the story, half of us laugh at the boy and the other half laugh at ourselves. Famous author Mark Twain grew up in a Protestant church, but was never a Christian. On many occasions, readers will recognize Twain's blatant examination and mockery of the Church. He repeatedly degrades and describes the Church as hypocritical and elitist. Whether it's making others do his work, being frightened by screaming in a cemetery, or any other childhood antics, Tom's adventures are full of humor, wit, and thought-provoking remarks. and are essential reading for any serious reader.
