Essay / Logical TheorySince the advent of racism, human beings have judged each other based on their race and ethnicity. People's opinions based on their skin color, place of origin, or cultural background have caused stratification of men and women. We now have majority and minority groups, hate groups, ethnic enclaves, segregation, income differences and have even experienced mass genocide in our world (Carl, 2011). All of these are direct effects of a person's race or ethnicity. All of this gives humans a struggle among themselves for various resources. Racial and ethnic stratification is an integral example of conflict theory because competition for resources takes place between people from different backgrounds (Carl, 2011). In America we have a majority and many minority groups. White or non-Hispanic people constitute the majority group, while Native Hawaiians, African Americans, Native Americans, Asians, and Hispanic or Latino Americans all constitute distinct minority groups (Carl, 2011). A majority group not only holds the largest population, but also holds the most power in a society. Conversely, a minority group represents very little of the population, but holds almost no power compared to the majority group (Long, 2013). Here, Caucasians have the most power, while all of our minorities have very little. The struggle for power is an excellent example of classic conflict theory (Carl, 2011). While everyone competes for resources, the dominant group wins the resources. The dominant group in this situation would be the majority group, or White people (Carl, 2011).
