Media essay – Representation of womenThe representation of women in the media is very complex today. In some media texts such as the 'Asda Christmas advert', the dominant ideology that women are happily married and domesticated is reinforced. , while in other media texts such as "Miranda", the dominant ideology of women is challenged as they attempt to break down the stereotypes that people have towards women. “Miranda” is a television program created by the BBC, one of the world's largest public service broadcasters. which aim to inform, educate and entertain. The BBC needs to reflect the female audience and it has done so through “Miranda”, which broadens the ideology of women. Miranda is the profile of a thirty-four year old woman whose mode of address is informal and she presents herself as casual through her casual dress sense. The dominant ideology is challenged by Miranda's belief in having fun and being interested in the opposite sex rather than marriage and babies. During the episode there are several long camera angles of Miranda and Stevie to reinforce the binary opposition (Levi Strauss) of Miranda being more childish while Stevie is smaller and girly as shown by the clothes she wears. 'she wears which are skirts, compared to Miranda. who wears sweaters and jeans. The BBC used the removal of the fourth wall to allow Miranda to communicate with the audience, especially during difficult times. Perhaps the hegemonic value of “Miranda” lies in the fact that relationships and pleasure are more important, which would actually challenge the hegemonic value of the female form. Polysemous readings could be that the audience could admire Miranda for being confident and staying away from the norm, but another way for the audience to understand...... middle of paper .... .. the families and children are very happy and the woman can be considered a model for other mothers. However, some viewers may view it as fake, as the advert is full of happy faces and Christmas is one of the most stressful times of the year. The contextualization of this ad is that it remains the dominant ideology of women. Asda chose to represent women in this way to remind society that women are responsible for the household. In conclusion, my opinion is that the media still represents women as being more self-aware and more concerned with their beauty. In many TV shows, movies and commercials the women used are very pretty and are exposed and sometimes they are too dependent on men. Although there are a few rare media texts where the woman shows herself to be independent and happy on her own without giving in to society. Works cited by Strauss
