The greatest concern about culture is that globalization contributes to the loss of culture. As Western culture imposes itself on the rest of the world, diversity decreases and we become more homogenous, meaning we become more like one big culture. Take any of the big companies, for example Apple, McDonalds or Starbucks, which you can find in an increasing number of countries. This homogeneous culture does not have to be a terrible thing, however, and Mark Pagel argues that it is a valuable thing. According to Pagel, globalization helps culture because βit increases our sense of unity through the feeling of a shared culture. In fact, breaking down cultural barriers β as old-fashioned as it may seem β is probably one of the few things societies can do to increase harmony among increasingly heterogeneous peoples.
