Essay / Prayer in Schools - 1354
Over the years there has been a very controversial debate over whether prayer should be integrated into public schools; half the population votes no on the subject. Many people feel that allowing prayer services in schools would be offensive and time-consuming. A common fear among the population is that there is not an equal way of recognizing everyone's religion. There would be even more controversy over which religions should be taught and how, and it is very likely that one person's religion could offend another's, which would only cause even more controversy. that each religion be recognized within public schools to welcome everyone without offending anyone. It is simply not possible to incorporate a sense of “prayer service” that meets everyone's needs without completely disrupting the school curriculum and constituting some form of offense. Another valid point is that this goes against what our country was all about. built on. America was created because the colonists wanted religious freedom. When our founding fathers came to the United States from England, one of the main problems was that in England religion was forced on people and individual choices about what to believe were not a option. When our country's founding fathers wrote the constitution, they were very cautious about granting the freedom of separation of church and state. Many Americans believe that praying in school would effectively violate this part of our constitution. Many people argue that public schools are only for educational purposes and not for proselytizing. Schools are part of the public while religion is something personal and...... middle of paper...... maintain and teach values and morals. Both audiences make very good arguments about what they think is right and what they think. they think it's appropriate. Personally, I think that as Americans we are too sensitive towards each other and too afraid of hurting someone's feelings when it comes to political issues. I think the government can interfere too much and we as a people need to be able to stand up for ourselves and have more personal freedoms, which would include the right to practice religion in school. I can understand the other half of the argument; However, I don't see how having a moment of silence each day to take a minute for yourself would be offensive, intrusive, or too personal. I think we should have the right to practice our own religion without fear of the negative effects it might have on others..
