[The role of an engineer]Introduction…In this project, I would like to explain that our society and community want an engineer to strictly follow the rule and law. There are two key points: neglect and respect. Two case examples show how a disaster and a serious accident occur without any control, in a negligent and respectful manner. For a more detailed history, two articles describe the role of engineers. The only story concerns trench accidents, "Trench Failure". This case shows how important the professional responsibility of engineers is. This is the legal responsibility of the engineer versus social responsibility. The second case concerns respect for nature through engineering. This is the case of “Aberdeen Three” and the story concerns the crime of environmental pollution. But this story is also about the role, which is also linked to the legal and social responsibility of the engineer, as an engineer in modern life and society. In the case of “Trench Failure”, the sad story showed us how important the problem of ethics for engineers is. However, until recently, many construction companies and engineers have not shown how ethical they are. On site1), many construction companies are willing to save the expense of trench boxes.
