  • Essay / What is the design of Roman cities? - 551

Cities are built in different ways and one question I have always wanted to know is what are the designs of Roman cities. This article will give you the answer to this question in the form of three other questions. How did they build their cities? Why did they build them this way? and Are we still building cities this way? When the Romans built their cities, they always added aqueducts. They also made almost everything from concrete and began using it over 2,100 years ago. They built many fountains throughout the city, of different sizes, shapes and designs. They also had amphitheaters that were very large and most of the time they only had one amphitheater per city, on the outskirts of the city. (“10 Innovations That Built Ancient Rome,” 2013)More things they did when they built their cities. They built walls around their main cities. Markets were located in the middle of the city and sold various items. They also built two main roads into their towns. One heading north-south and the other heading east-west intersecting in the middle of the city called the forum. (“Roman Cities,” 2013) The reason they built their cities this way was for function, protection, appearance, and entertainment. here are some specific reasons for certain things. They installed aqueducts in their towns to have running water and public toilets and baths. Their public baths had four floors. The first is the room where they undress, the second is where they stretch and put oil (they didn't use soap), the third where they take a very hot bath and the last where they take a very cold bath. bath to cool off from the very hot bath. ("Roman Technology.", 2013)They used concrete in the construction of their buildings because it was extremely durable and lasted a long time. Some of their buildings have been there for hundreds of years. The reason they built so many fountains was because they all had different uses. Some fountains were designed to honor certain gods, others were for nearby washing, and still others were for supplemental water from aqueducts. They built amphitheaters so they could perform plays and they also had them so they could make announcements to large numbers of people at once. The reason they had one road going north-south and another going east-west is so people could move easily through the city and get to the center quickly..
