  • Essay / Persuasive Essay on Censorship - 1541

Everywhere one turns there are censors, protection against "explicit material" and pixels to blur middle fingers and body parts. If one turns on the television, there will be blurs and beeps between each channel and even parts will be removed from films due to content censored by the audience. Music and even television are censored to “prevent negative displays of cultures, individuals or communities” (“Revealed…”). Censorship mainly concerns parents and children – who they consider to have the best and worst influence on them. Of course, one can argue that censors are mandatory, especially for children, but in reality, censors are not essential nuisances. These censors create a barrier for teens and preteens from reality and what actually happens in real life. As well as protecting young children from harmful elements that a child should not see. Although censorship is necessary to protect children from explicit material, censorship is also too strong in books, music and television. You can read books to gain knowledge and increase your reading level, but not to come across offensive language or words. Especially at school, children are censored from these books which cause controversy in class. It's the parents who have a hard time letting their children read these books because they use profanity or have morals that differ from their personal values. As a parent, it is their right to fight against the banning of books that use language such as the “n-word” or characters depicted in a negative manner. Currently, in classrooms, “race matters in these books. It’s all about how you express that in the 21st century” (Schultz). When children read these novels, they may think it's okay for them to be in the middle of a paper...censoring books, music, and television. While parents may argue that all of this needs to be censored for the sake of their children, they don't realize that they have been exposed to this stuff before. Even if books are banned because they are controversial, this only deprives children of valuable lessons. Books also provide young people with different ideas and can help them realize that variation in ideas is important. Censorship and music have also often been discussed, but music is everywhere censored or not, so it is likely that children will hear "inappropriate" songs. Finally, television is something that is constantly censored, so parents have to decide what is censored and what is not. In conclusion, censorship is a topic that is becoming a concern for parents and children across America..
