They have five social structures in this system, with the Brahmins being the highest who are the priests or ritual specialists and the Untouchables being at the bottom considered polluted or impure. Throughout the film, I began to analyze how widows would be classified as untouchable; even at one point in the film, there was a scene where Kalyani accidentally brushed against a lady who was probably in a higher structure, and she says to Kalyani, “You have polluted me!” I still have to bathe. I was so shocked to hear her say that because Kalyani's appearance doesn't make it seem like she's untouchable; yes maybe the clothing she wore indicated that she was a widow but everything else would say otherwise. No one wants to deal with the untouchables and that's how it is with widows, they are expected to live their lives in poverty, they are excluded from all activities that people of higher structure might experience, and they have little or no income. ; the best they can do to get income is to beg. What surprises me is that both the untouchables and the widows accept this way of life, finally because they have no choice; Either they were born there, or they have the misfortune of getting married and losing everything once married..
