    Girls learned their literary skills from their parents or a tutor. Unlike boys who would inherit their father's office, girls never attained such a position. It was only in the Middle Kingdom that the word "seshet", the feminine form of "sesh" meaning scribe, appeared. This leads scholars to assume that female scribes existed and were likely employed in a large private or royal household. Over the centuries, female scribes were occasionally mentioned. However, women practicing this profession were rare. It has been assumed that women who acted as professional scribes only served
