    ComparisonsAs noted earlier, the Olympic Games have become a mega-event in terms of size and complexity compared to what they were in their early days at the Games Athens Olympics of 1896, when only 241 amateur athletes competed in mini sports. Another risk that mega-events such as the Olympic Games can face is the risk of not being able to maintain financial controls, such as going over what has been agreed on the budget. For example, during the 1976 Montreal Olympics, organizers were faced with the problem of having to modify the velodrome when they discovered that the subsurface was weak and unstable; an aspect that was missing from the geological studies carried out at the beginning.
