Easy is an African-American World War II veteran living in an era before the black rights movement. The Good Thief is set in the mid-1800s in America. Ren is a naive 12-year-old orphan living in a neighborhood with a low standard of living. Each of the characters' environments affected their changing views on friendship, morality, beliefs, and other people. Easy values friendship greatly due to how often Mouse came to his aid and saved him from being killed or put into immoral situations. After Easy receives Mouse's letter, he doubts himself because Mouse killed his own stepfather. As the plot progresses, Easy gains trust and loyalty to Mouse that he did not have before. Friendship comes with Easy's morality. His morality is maintained throughout the novel. Easy keeps telling himself that “a voice” in his head will stop him from making morally bad choices (Mosley 57). He never kills anyone in the novel or corrupts their moral standards. However, Ren starts out with strong faith and high morals, which fades by the end of the novel. Ren's exposure to people with different moral and religious values forces him to change the way he views life, others, friendship, and himself.
