  • Essay / The negative effects of advertising on society - 636

Money. Our economy, our nation, our life thrives on this lifeless, tangible paper. It is clear that in the eyes of an advertiser, money is crucial. After all, the purpose of advertising a product is to sell it, which will ultimately make a lot of money for companies and their advertisers. At first glance, this may seem reasonable, but advertisements are actually harmful to society and its health and well-being. Because it's their job, advertisers do an impeccable job of targeting and convincing society to buy products. Although stupid television commercials may seem ineffective, there is evidence that "a person who ignores the claims of advertising about him is precisely the one most vulnerable to advertising's attack" (Schrank). Through what may seem like unnecessary advertisements, companies are able to dictate and control society into buying their products without the consumer even realizing it! This is detrimental to the individual exposed to advertisements, as they lose control of their lives in the economic and consumer world. It's almost as if advertising is hypnotizing society. Described in Source D, once a company hooks consumers (teenagers in particular), they or "it can be yours for life." (Day). This raises the problem of advertisements imposing harmful effects on a person's well-being. Control of their lives is now in the hands of advertisers and societal perceptions, so the helpless adolescent can only follow and slowly degrade their self-esteem without even realizing it. Part of the population could argue, probably money-hungry advertisers. in particular, that advertisements are useful tools for educating the public about important products they need in daily life. However, Sesana uses a humorous approach to identify the advertisement as unnecessary by stating that vital products are not even advertised! “No one spends huge sums on flour advertising. People will buy it even without there being any advertising. (SourceF). Not only are ads harmful, they're not even necessary! Society can live without flashy cars or cigarettes, so why target the population so diligently if these products aren't even necessary for a prosperous life? Since advertising makes people useless, it wastes society's time and energy that could be better spent improving the world instead of benefiting a greedy corporation. A prominent issue raised by the act of advertising is the possible vulnerability of a person's health. Companies choose to advertise products that are dangerous to health, blinded by the revenue they wish to obtain. According to Source B, cigarettes, although dangerous for health, still thrive on the market.
