  • Essay / Social institutions and inequality: work and the economy

Work and the economy is a social institution that includes many inequalities. There may be inequalities based on gender or race. Ore believed that inequalities in work and economics could either give a person new privileges and opportunities or hinder them (Ore, 227). In other words, these inequalities could help them move up the career ladder or keep them stuck in the same position without promotion. There is also racial discrimination in the hiring process or in the workplace itself. Gender can also play a role in how a person is treated at work. I will use the articles “Discrimination in a Low-Wage Labor Market: A Field Experiment” and “Racializing the Glass Escalator: Reconsidering Men's Experience with Women's Work” to explain in more detail. The article “Discrimination in a Low-Wage Labor Market: A Field Experiment” explains how race plays a role in low-wage jobs. Race can influence the choice of employers or the types of jobs performed by certain races. For example, an experiment was carried out with three candidates: White, Black and Latino. They had fake CVs created and all applied for the same jobs. In addition to the similarities in their resumes, they all had “criminal histories” that included a misdemeanor drug charge. Then these people need to apply for a job and see who was hired. Regardless of their criminal record, white people are hired more often. This happened even when other races had more education and/or experience. This shows that, regardless of the circumstances, many employers would rather hire a white person than a minority; even if it meant a criminal was working for them. In my opinion, this was a rather shocking discovery. In the second example, the basic setup was the same with some slight differences...... middle of paper ...... However, it affected my parents' lives. For example, my father works in a small family bookcase manufacturing business where he has worked for almost 15 years. He recently applied for a supervisor/team leader position. He was more than qualified as he has over 25 years of manufacturing experience and time invested in the business. He was not selected for the position and it was given to someone brought in by the company owner; one of his daughter's friends. The rumor around the company is that my father was chosen for racial reasons since he is black and the new employee is white. This shows that many companies do not promote you based on your experience. It's mostly about favoritism. Works Cited Ore, T. (2014).
