Is America curious or necessary? “Human rights are the soul of our foreign policy, because human rights are the very soul of our national sense of belonging” - Jimmy Carter. United States foreign policy is felt around the world through our involvement in the affairs of other countries. Some say our presence in the world causes more harm than good, while others believe our protection is essential to their well-being. We spend billions of dollars on weapons, foreign aid, and maintaining standing armies around the world. I think it is beneficial to expand our foreign policy around the world. Although we pay billions of dollars that continue to cripple our economy by maintaining our foreign policy, our efforts during World War I, World War II, and the Persian Gulf War show that our involvement in foreign affairs is not only necessary , but beneficial to the well-being of the country. The United States was needed during World War I because tired British troops could no longer repel the German onslaught. Woodrow Wilson took full control of American foreign policy matters within the confines of the Constitution. He maintained America's neutrality because he did not believe his interests would be threatened by a European war, as long as trade continued as it always had. America entered World War I on April 6, 1917. Until that date, America had remained out of World War I, although it had traded with other nations involved in the war . Unlimited submarine warfare, initiated by the Germans on January 9, 1917, was the major issue that forced Woodrow Wilson to ask Congress to declare war on Germany on April 2. Despite the declaration of war, Wilson continued to fight for peace and began to develop his idea of a League of Nations capable of restoring peace...... middle of paper ......ch, CT : Devin-Adair, 1983. “Persian Gulf War” print.
