Essay / The social impact of cell phones - 935
In today's world, the vast majority of the population owns a cell phone. Mobile phones are an integral part of people's daily lives. Since the 1940s, when cell phones became available for automobiles, telephone companies have made enormous strides in making cell phones more efficient, much smaller, and more accessible to everyone. There was a time when only rich people owned this type of cell phone. Now, people of all social classes own a cell phone. They are extremely practical and have the ability to do just about anything you can think of. There is an “app” for everything. You can make phone calls, send text messages, surf the web, pay bills, read books, check social media, and even listen to music all from one small portable device. Cell phones play a huge role in today's economy. Companies like AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint have grown into huge public companies with large stock market stakes. Between these companies and several other telephone companies, they have created millions of jobs and opportunities. Cell phone companies have now created what are called “smart phones”. These phones are usually slim and sleek and have countless versatile capabilities. However, cell phones haven't always been this "smart" or this small. When phones first became available to the public, they were not considered mobile in the current sense. They could be installed in an automobile, they were large and bulky, and their use required and consumed a lot of energy. Telephone networks would only support a few simultaneous conversations. Since then, cell phones have dramatically improved in efficiency, capabilities and size. The first cell phone was not produced until 1973. The origin...... middle of paper...... in the 1970s and shows no signs of slowing down. The opportunities and possibilities offered by this technology are endless and constantly growing. Cell phones have generated economic growth and created millions of jobs. This technology has come with its share of moral issues, but nothing that can't be avoided by raising awareness and exercising caution when using a cell phone. The benefits of this technology far outweigh the negative side effects, and in my opinion, the social impact that this technology has had on this world has been nothing short of extraordinary. http://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/cyberbullying-linked-suicides-rising-study-says-1.1213435 http://www.tutor2u.net/blog/index.php/economys/comments/mobile-phones - the impact-on-the-economy-society-and-our-personal-life
