  • Essay / Representations of May 68 in French memory - 1459

The events of 1968 are well anchored in the collective memory of French society. More than a hundred works have been published on the meaning and significance of this year in France and many other discussions have taken place. It is arguably difficult to understand what 68 meant to many activists at the time and even what it means to them today. Daniel A. Gordon, Robert Gildea and Bertram Gordon attempt to organize in their articles the different thoughts and perspectives on 1968. Their divergent, but sometimes overlapping, views led their articles to be revised due to the diversity of the available literature which sheds light on the memories of 68 in France from several angles. The first article “Memories of May 68: the practical consensus of France” by Daniel A. Gordon, published in 2012, comes from the twentieth volume and second issue of the journal Modern & Contemporary France. In his brief review of Memory of May 68: France's Practical Consensus by Chris Reynolds, Daniel Gordon states that Reynolds has proven that memories of 68 are reduced to this single month (May) during which the "children" of the society of he elite led a revolt against the political framework in which they were raised. The second article “Utopia and conflict in the oral testimonies of French activists from 1968” by Robert Gildea, published in 2013, comes from the sixth volume and the first publication of the journal Memory Studies. . The material for this article comes from the 2007-2011 pan-European project entitled “Around 1968: Activism, Networks, Trajectories”. In his published article, Gildea brings together five interviews with former activists in 1968 in France. These interviews are then explored through the shadow of two emerging cultural narratives...... middle of paper ...... they all influenced a sense of activism and revolt. On the contrary, Daniel Gordon's article makes no mention of this phenomenon. But it must also be taken into consideration that this written article is simply a book review and therefore does not incorporate all of the analyzes located in Reynold's Memories of May 68: The Practical Consensus of France.
