This is an area where advocacy and empowerment are essential, especially if a client feels unable to cope with the major systems of society on their own. This is also an area that a client may resort to for many different reasons and we should look beyond just a diagnosis. This is also an area we have discussed in class that is not always culturally competent. Many other cultures may show signs of mental illness when in reality it is how they function within that group. This is the main reason why practitioners should ask clients about their background and questions about their behavior if they are unfamiliar before placing them.
