Nationalism is being patriotic towards one's own country. This happened in the 19th century for people who shared a language, history and culture. Nationalism led to the creation of new powers, namely Italy and Germany. As these countries became united and stronger, they created war against other countries. Imperialism is described as the strengthening of a country's territorial borders in order to conquer another country so that it can become powerful. It began in the 19th century, when most countries in Europe had lost their overseas colonies. These included England and its American colonies and the Spanish with South America. Raw materials and entry into new markets were one of the main reasons behind the origin of imperialism. Europeans needed raw materials, they could not produce them in their own country and therefore could not improve the industrial revolution of raw materials such as oil, rubber and metals. Europeans were looking for places where they could extract these raw materials, and when they landed in these colonies, there was less of a market and little innovation to use these resources. This helped them become economically stronger. Europeans also needed power to be able to control other countries. In order to gain control over other countries, European countries first had to protect their resources so that they could grow economically and become superior. Medicine was another factor that contributed to the growth of imperialism in Europe. It was easier for superior European countries to retain their colonies by modernizing medicine in those countries.
