  • Essay / The Evolution of Memory Systems - 2039

Memory systems include: episodic, procedural, semantic, classical conditions, priming and non-associative learning (Henke, 2010). All memory systems are independent of each other and are controlled by different regions of the brain (Henke, 2010). It is very likely that memory systems did not evolve with the goal of remembering everything (Nairne, 2010). If all information presented is stored, storage problems could arise (Nairne, 2010). To avoid this, memory selectivity is necessary and memory systems may respond to the specific fitness-related information they receive due to biases embedded in different memory types (Nairne, 2010). This literature review will focus on studying the mechanism behind procedural memory and the effects of music on humans.
