Major: International CommunicationStudent: Dararoath VANDETHADwork 1Theme 1: Are Habermas's idea of the public sphere and McLuhan's ideas of the global village really compatible? The concept of the global villageMarshall McLuhan, a Canadian philosopher of communication theory, developed the concept of the term "Global Village" in two of his first books: The Gutenberg Galaxy, in 1962, and Understanding Media: The Extension of Man, in 1964. He defined the global village as a small village where electronic media has made this possible, and how information flows simultaneously from certain parts of the world. (Mcluhan, 1964) No matter how far or close anything is happening in the world, people can see and hear what happened immediately, in just a few seconds. Electronic media, Mcluhan said, has made people aware of issues happening around the world and allowed them to respond as if they were happening in the same village where people live. “Today, after more than a century of electrical technology, we have expanded our central nervous system. in a global embrace, abolishing both space and time as far as our planet is concerned” (Mcluhan, 1964, p.3). Mcluhan's fundamental concept of the global village is that communication at a rapid speed, where it extends the senses of people with sound and vision. The computer and television have expanded our sense of hearing and sight, while the telephone and radio have expanded our sense of listening (Symes, 1995). As director of the Center for Culture and Technology at the University of Toronto from 1963 to 1980, McLuhan was known as a "guru" of media culture (http://staging.yorkwilsonfoundation.org/videos/eric- mcluhan.htm)Concept of the public sphereJurgen Habermas, German sociologist and philosopher...... middle of article.. .... political institutions and the commercial economy. Boeder (2005) believes that this could change through digital communications technology by strengthening groups and individuals. In conclusion, Habermas' idea of the public sphere and Mcluhan's idea of the global village are really compatible on the three main points mentioned. First, both concepts express a goal of achieving a democracy, which has an influence on society, culture, economy and politics. Second, both ideas emphasize the importance of media. Although Habermas found that the emergence and convergence of electronic media has radically changed the notion of the public sphere. however, later Habermas still maintains that the media is a public sphere. Third, other researchers might suggest that these two ideas provide a picture of how digital media works today..
