Four months earlier, in June 1944, the Battle of the Philippine Sea took place. This was the Japanese attempt to defeat the American Naval Air Force with everything they had. The end result was that 3 Japanese aircraft carriers were sunk and over 600 Japanese aircraft shot down or destroyed. After this engagement, the Japanese naval air force was virtually useless due to the lack of aircraft and pilots, especially experienced pilots. Due to supplies and routes to/from the Philippines, the Japanese command knew that if the Philippines was lost, then the war was lost. The Japanese proposed another plan for an all-out battle to destroy the American invasion force, just as they had previously attempted to do during the Battle of the Philippine Sea. This time, they took extreme measures that, if everything worked as planned, could eventually destroy the American invasion fleet. They knew that the United States considered aircraft carriers to be the Navy's most valuable and dangerous targets, so they used their four remaining carriers to attract the 3rd Fleet. Vice Admiral Ozawa came down from the North and withdrew the main American covering force. At the same time, Central and Southern forces would attempt to penetrate middle of paper......in charge but not of each other. Without a proper chain of command with an intact plan, things like this happen. Halsey left Nimitz, didn't tell him, and almost ruined the entire invasion. Fortunately for the United States, the IJN had the same problems. The total losses of the American forces were: • 1,500+ dead; • 1 light aircraft carrier, • 2 escort aircraft carriers, • 2 destroyers, • 1 escort destroyer sunk.
