  • Essay / Marine Mammals Essay - 1081

We share this planet with so many other species, living both on land and in water. Just like us humans, there are mammals like monkeys that live on land and whales that live in the sea. Whales are not the only mammals that live in the sea, there are dolphins, walruses, seals , etc. Although the above-mentioned beings do not fall under a single biological group, they are classified as marine mammals due to their dependence on the sea for their existence. Whales and dolphins rely entirely on the sea for food and reproduction, while seals and walruses feed in the sea and breed on land. The distribution of marine mammal species is diverse and patchy, but the majority of marine mammals live near 40 degrees north and south latitude. This diversity is due to the fact that the existence of marine mammals depends on the richness of the oceans; their existence also increases the productivity of the oceans. The distribution of marine mammals coincides with human-affected ocean areas of high concern. Marine mammals have evolved in many ways to overcome the challenges they face when living in the sea. These characteristics are species specific. most cases. Many features have been modified and developed for efficient locomotion, reduced heat loss, etc. Features such as modified limbs and tail shape have evolved to help effectively maneuver the body while swimming and increase balance. Marine mammals are mostly hypoosmotic and tend to lose water into their environment. To overcome this adversity, they use their highly efficient kidneys which have evolved to retain water and concentrate urine. Living in the sea means a lot of diving, as marine mammals share the ocean with many other creatures middle of paper...... the distribution of prey changes and has also required some modifications to their migration routes and their breeding sites. Many species of marine mammals such as whales are facing extinction due to numerous activities carried out by humans. If we continue to hunt, pollute and interfere with nature and the natural habitat of marine mammals, the day is not far away when we will see whales and other mammals in pictures and videos rather than in their habitats natural. Small changes in our lifestyle can make a huge change in the lives of many of our cohabiting living creatures, from discouraging the use of products made from whale skin, reducing the use of plastic, trying to do our part in reducing greenhouse gases, etc. will go a long way in bringing change to the planet we live on. If we keep doing what we're doing, our planet might no longer appear green and blue from space...
